Sudan Artists Gallery was established mid 1999, to participate in an ongoing efforts of documentation for the contemporary Sudanese art in particular and contemporary art in Africa.
Our focus at this time is the documentation of art by artists of a Sudanese lineage. Participation on the gallery is not and was not meant to be confined to Sudanese nationals, any Artists with any experience in or about the Sudan may qualify to participate, or even those who shared some experience or memories relevant to the Sudan are welcome to share those experiences through SAG.

Through the years art done by sudanese artists has been scattered in poorly printed newspapers and magazines or other means of reproduction, stories of pioneer artists was largely scarce and hard to find. and many are not even told. Acknowledging those facts SAG was established to become a viable and significant source for materials and information about art and participating artists, and to play a grand roll on the documentation of " contemporary Sudan art works" scattered now all over the world.

SAG is playing a growing roll in educating young students in the US about a side of culture in Africa that has been ignored for a long time. Many school districts are using the resources provided by our Gallery to educate students about contemporary culture in Sudan and in Africa at large.

The gallery is a non profit organization , founded by Iman Shaggag - graduated from the college of Fine and Applied Art, Sudan 1996- and myself. Iman has been an active artist in the Sudan as well as here in the US since her arrival in 1997.

Iman wanted the gallery to remain opened for contributions, with minimal amount of conditions and definitive restrictions placed on participants, in order to allow for the largest possible number of artists to engage and contribute to the project.

One of our goals is to enhance the discussions and furnish dialog between artists, art critics and scholars. And to append an additional perspective to the debate about culture and Art in the Sudan.

I personally believe that the gallery will provide a great opportunity for artists, to utilize the new possibilities made available by the Internet and the digital revolution. It is relatively an inexpensive media compared to the high cost of reproducing art via traditional media.

The gallery is probably the largest collection available for 'Sudan- contemporary art' within the World Wide Web, and possibly outside its boundaries as well. It has been constantly adorned by a growing number of visitors, many of whom are art students, professional artists, scholars and educators.

Personally I found it an enriching experience to observe and compare the elements of similarity and difference between participating artists works, and to trace some of the influences present at many of the pieces exhibited. conveniently navigating through generations of "sudan artists". It's an incredible chance to view all those artists simultaneously in our cyber space.

I encourage all "Sudan artists" in particular and friends of the gallery to foster this effort by actively engage on it and help to promote it to reach its highest possibilities.
